What Time of Year Is Hurricane Season in Florida?

Hurricane season in Florida is June through November, with most activity occurring from mid-August to mid-October.

How to Prepare:

Use the following tips to prepare for hurricane season:

  • Create an emergency plan for your household. An emergency plan should include evacuation routes and predetermined meeting areas. Plan several routes to your emergency destination. Make sure this plan includes your family pets and their necessities.
  • Gather supplies. Assemble a kit of essentials, including water, nonperishable foods, medications, flashlights, batteries and important documents. There should be enough supplies to last your family at least 72 hours.
  • Monitor weather reports. Stay current on weather reports through a trusted source, such as the National Hurricane Center. Familiarize yourself with the various types of weather alerts.
  • Review your homeowners insurance. Before hurricane season begins, review your homeowners insurance to make sure your coverage is up to date. If you don’t already have it, consider adding a flood insurance policy to your portfolio. Most homeowners insurance policies will not cover flood damage from a storm.
  • Protect your home. When a storm is imminent, consider boarding up windows or installing storm shutters. Bring in or secure all outdoor furniture. You may also want to inspect your roof for loose shingles and make sure your gutters are clear to prevent water from leaking and causing damage.
